Unifor sends solidarity and support to the people of Fort McMurray

Friday, May 13, 2016 - 05:00

This natural disaster has impacted an entire community and has resulted in an outpouring of support across Canada and around the world, as the families affected struggle to put their lives back together.  UNIFOR have shown great leadership and thoughtfulness by partnering a fund-raiser to support the Canadian Red Cross in its efforts to get an entire community back on its feet.  Since the evacuation began, the union has been working to provide food, shelter and support for Fort McMurray residents displaced by the fires and have donated $500,000 which includes fudns from the Social Justice Department, the Ontario,Quebec, Prairies and East coast Councils.   Every dollar that we donate to the Canadian Red Cross for Fort McMurray relief will be matched dollar for dollar by the Canadian Federal Government.

At this time, I would like to say a big “Thank You” to our UNIFOR National and to all the Members and employees for the community spirit demonstrated in undertaking this humanitarian effort, it is much appreciated

In Solidarity,

Mary Ellen McIlmoyle
